There is a lot of talk about the increase in scale and the impact on reliability of the container carriers, attached overview makes these facts transparent.

The big container carriers have all ordered new mega ships : part of them were delivered in 2014 and the remainder are scheduled for delivery in 2015 and 2016 (amongst which the, so far, biggest vessel of 20600 teu). Part of the rate fluctuations is caused by this increase in scale and capacity and with all new vessel deliveries it looks like we will not see the end of these fluctuations very soon.

For us the service level and reliability is an increasingly important factor in the selection of carriers, especially on the westbound trade.
